racism and homophobia in the U.S.

Would regality theory predict that when a nation feels threatened, there would be a simultaneous increase in racism and homophobia? If so, I'm wondering how to explain the changes that are happening in the U.S. There is an increase acceptance of gay rights, and an increase and racism. I had assumed that regality from an economic downturn was responsible for the increase in racism, but maybe not since there isn't a simultaneous increase in homophobia.
